Với sự hậu thuẫn của Hoa Kỳ, Việt Nam Cộng hòa bác bỏ việc thực hiện tổng tuyển cử thống nhất Việt Nam vào năm 1956 theo Hiệp định Genève với lý do họ không ký hiệp định này. Chính phủ Việt Nam Cộng hòa đối chọi với Chính phủ Cách mạng lâm thời Cộng hòa miền Nam Việt Nam thành lập năm 1969 do Mặt trận Dân tộc Giải phóng miền Nam Việt Nam lãnh đạo.Nguồn gốc của Việt Nam Cộng hòa bắt nguồn từ Chiến tranh Đông Dương. Sau khi Pháp thất bại và rút quân về nước vào năm 1954, Hoa Kỳ thế chỗ Pháp, tiếp tục hậu thuẫn chế độ Quốc gia Việt Nam nhằm ngăn chặn việc Việt Nam Dân chủ Cộng hòa tiếp quản toàn bộ đất nước. Thủ tướng Ngô Đình Diệm đã phế truất Bảo Đại vào năm 1955 sau một cuộc trưng cầu dân ý. Quốc gia Việt Nam được đổi tên thành Việt Nam Cộng hòa vào ngày 26 tháng 10 năm 1955, với Ngô Đình Diệm là tổng thống đầu tiên.
